The Wegelius Chamber Orchestra was founded by Ralf Sjöblom at a music course of the Martin Wegelius Institute, Helsinki, in summer 1986. In 1991, Sjöblom was succeeded as Artistic Director and conductor by its concertmaster John Storgårds.
The Wegelius Chamber Orchestra is primarily a string ensemble of variable size that can handle music ranging from works for small chamber ensembles to sinfoniettas. Its repertoire extends from early Baroque to contemporary music, with a special penchant for works by Finnish composers. In addition to first performances and old standbys for string orchestra, it has performed many rarely-played pieces. The Orchestra has given concerts throughout Finland as well as in other Nordic and Baltic countries.
