Marita Viitasalo, piano

Finnish pianist Marita Viitasalo launched her solo career in 1968 subsequent to becoming a laureate at the 1968 Maj Lind Piano Competition. In 1972, she graduated from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and went on for further studies at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Academy of Music in Vienna. Her solo recordings include works by Sibelius, Debussy, and Ravel.

Marita Viitasalo has been the permanent duo partner of soprano Soile Isokoski since 1987. Together they have given recitals all over the world and made numerous recordings, including songs by Hindemith (Das Marienleben), Schubert, Schumann, and Wolf. Marita Viitasalo is a founding member of Trio Finlandia.

Marita Viitasalo was a lecturer at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki from 1981-2010. She has been Artistic Co-Director of the International Piano Festival in Espoo since 1989. In 2006, she received the Pro Finlandia Medal.
