Meet the composer

Visual: Meet the composer, Einojuhani Rautavaara

Einojuhani Rautavaara

Einojuhani Rautavaara (b. 1928) is regarded as "one of the greatest living composers" (David Hurwitz - ClassicsToday.com). As a protégé of Jean Sibelius, he wrote in 1955 a piano cycle to Byzantine Icons (ODE 710-2). Half a century later, in 2005, Rautavaara completed his orchestral version of the six icons, adding four newly-composed ‘prayers’ and a final Amen. Its premiere recording features Leif Segerstam and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and also includes the 2007 orchestral trilogy A Tapestry of Life (ODE 1149-2).
