Press review

A new master recording, celebrating the music of Peteris Vasks, the musical consciousness, if not the Mahler or the Shostakovich of our time.
Christophe Huss, ClassicsTodayFrance.com, November 2007, Disc of the Month, Artistic Quality 10 / Sound Quality 10

Beautifully performed, a rare outing for Vask's choral music.
Guy Rickards, Gramophone, Awards 2007 issue, 'Gramophone recommends'

Vasks does not deal in overt emotion - the idiom is predominantly contemplative - but the result never fails to move, not least in Missa, the most substantial work on a compelling disc. (...) Latvian Radio Choir and Sinfonietta Riga under Sigvards Kjava bring their own special mystique.
Andrew Clark, The Financial Times, 1 September 1, 2007

(...) superb performances: clear, perfectly paced, beautifully balanced, sumptuously textured, with just the right pitch of emotion.
Barry Witherden, BBC Music Magazine, September 2007

Complete description

This CD follows on from the great success of two previous releases featuring the popular Latvian composer  Pēteris Vasks; the award-winning recording of Second Symphony and Violin Concerto Distant Light (ODE 1105-2) and the Third Symphony coupled with the Cello Concerto (ODE 1086-5).

Focusing on the religious aspect in Vasks' music, this disc contains three sacred works for choir and orchestra, featuring the outstanding Latvian Radio Choir and its conductor Sigvards Klava, as well as the Sinfonietta Riga. Based on Latin texts from the traditional Christian liturgy, these works include the two contemplative motets Pater noster (The Lord's Prayer) and Dona nobis pacem (Grant us peace), as well as the ordinary of the Mass. Pater noster and Missa are featured as world première recordings. The liner notes include an interview with the composer on the featured works.
