Classical Internet Award 2005 ('Disc of the Year') for Sibelius CD (17.01.2006)

The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra's recording of the Symphony no. 4, Pohjola's Daughter and Finlandia by Jean Sibelius is the winner of the Classical Internet Awards 2005 in the 'Orchestral Music' category, in addition to receiving the overall prize as 'Disc of the Year'. The Orchestra is conducted on this disc by Leif Segerstam and is assisted in Finlandia by the Polytech Choir (ODE 1040-2).

According to the awards committee, "These are essential, revelatory interpretations that no Sibelian worth his stripes can afford to miss."

The Classical Internet Awards are awarded each year by three leading affiliated websites - the American Classicstoday.com, the French ClassicstodayFrance.com and the German Klassik-Heute.com - and are the most prestigious classical music distinctions on the web.

Ondine has recently released a 4-CD set of the complete Sibelius symphonies performed by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under its chief conductor Leif Segerstam (ODE 1075-2Q). The recordings have been highly acclaimed in the international press:

  • "I'd rate this Seventh as one of the most imposing and highly charged of recent years." (Andrew Achenbach, Gramophone 2/2003)
  • "Both symphonies [1 & 7] enjoy superbly clear, rich recorded sound. This is a major Sibelius event. Ondine has waited long before venturing into these oft-recorded waters, and the wait has been worth it." (David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com)
  • Pizzicato of Luxembourg rated the fine recording of the Symphonies Nos. 1 & 7 the best available of these works (2/2004).
  • According to the International Record Review, Segerstam's version of the 2nd Symphony is one of the best and the recording as a whole magnificent (3/2004).
