BBC Music Magazine Award 2006 for Lindberg CD (16.03.2006)

The recording of Magnus Lindberg's Clarinet Concerto, coupled with two orchestral pieces by the same composer, is the winner of the first ever BBC Music Magazine Awards in the category 'Best Première Recording' (ODE 1038-2).

The BBC Music Magazine Awards 2006 recognise the best classical music recordings of 2005. Six individual category winners were voted for by the public, along with four special awards that were chosen by the jury alone, which selected Ondine's Lindberg recording as the winner in the category 'Premiere Recording'.

The award winning CD combines Magnus Lindberg's Clarinet Concerto, featuring Kari Kriikku as soloist with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo, as well as two other premiere recordings of Lindberg compositions, Grand Duo and Chorale. Martin Cotton, member of the awards jury, wrote, "Apart from Kari Kriikku's stunning playing in the Concerto, there's a dazzling kaleidoscope of colour from Oramo and the orchestra, in music that's completely up to date without losing touch with the baseline of traditional forms."

Magnus Lindberg's statement at the award ceremony, which took place in London on March 15: "I'm stunned. It's not 'obvious' music. I wanted to do a real concerto. There was a time when a concerto had to be something like an anti-concerto - against the instrument and against the whole conception of soloist and orchestra. Today I don't see any problem in doing a real concerto where the soloist plays in juxtaposition, or together with the orchestra."

The Lindberg CD had previously obtained a five-star top review in the September issue of the BBC Music Magazine. Calum MacDonald wrote, "Magnus Lindberg's Clarinet Concerto has enjoyed phenomenal success since its 2002 premiere, and rightly so. A marvellous vehicle for the amazing virtuosity of clarinetist Kari Kriikku, this is a shiny, sophisticated, nostalgic cultural artefact, indubitably contemporary in language yet sensuously easy (tuneful, even) on the ear. It's unafraid to wear its heart on its sleeve."

Since its release in summer 2005, the CD has received outstanding reviews and accolades throughout the international press. Previous awards include:

  • 'Disc of the Year 2005' by the New York Times, Financial Times, and on BBC Radio 3,
  • 'Choc de l'année 2005' as one of the 20 best CDs of 2005 in the French magazine Le Monde de la Musique,
  • 'Editor's Choice' in Gramophone's October 2005 issue,
  • 'Evénements CD' together with a 'R10' rating in the French magazine Classica-Repertoire's January 2006 issue,
  • 'Disc of the Month' by the online magazine ClassicsToday.com in November 2005,
  • 'Classical CD of the Week' by The Guardian in September 2005,
  • 'Supersonic Award' by Pizzicato in December 2005.
