Such an outstanding reading makes this an obvious front runner in a highly competitive field (...). Mørk plays this deeply introspective music with great sensitivity and projects the almost suffocating sense of suggering that infuses the solo part.
This exciting new release with Truls Mørk and Vasily Petrenko continues Ondine's successful series of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) recordings.
The recording includes Shostakovich cello concertos, which are among the composer's best-known works, performed by one of the most respected and prestigious contemporary cellists, Truls Mørk, together with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under Vasily Petrenko.
Shostakovich's virtuosic cello concertos were written for Mstislav Rostropovich during some of the composer's most fruitful years in the 1950s and 1960s. Besides dashing virtuosity the concertos include also substantial symphonic elements: the second cello concerto was originally intended as a symphony by the composer but later evolved into a concerto.
This recording is the first release of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under their artistic director Vasily Petrenko, a star conductor of the younger generation, who has recently also recorded an ongoing and award-winning recording cycle of the Shostakovich symphonies.
