Complete description

Latvian composer Arturs Maskats (b. 1957) has been at the center of Latvian cultural life for decades, especially in the field of theater and opera. Besides operas, incidental music and film music, his catalogue of works includes several orchestral works and concertos, songs and choral works. This new album by the Latvian National Orchestra and conductor Andris Poga includes one of Maskats’ latest creations in the field orchestral music: his Accordion Concerto (2021) here performed by his fellow Latvian, star-accordionist Ksenija Sidorova, one of the brightest names in classical music today.

Maskats’ compositions are tonal, often romantic and cinematic, and marked by deep atmosphere. His international reputation largely rests on his Tango (2002), an award-winning work for symphony orchestra, which is also among the most-performed orchestral works by any Latvian composer. In 2022, the piece was also performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker and Andris Nelsons in the Summer Night Concert series in Schönbrunn. In essence, Maskats does to the tango something similar to what Ravel does to the waltz in his La Valse.

The Accordion Concerto, “What the Wind Told Over the Sea” (2021) was written for the accordionist Ksenija Sidorova. The work is dedicated to Sidorova who both inspired the creation of the music, and, to a certain degree, the title of the work. This work filled with deep longing depicts the Baltic Sea.

Cantus Diatonicus (1982) is a relatively early orchestral work written by the composer in his 20s and originally written as a diploma work for the Latvian Academy of Music. The symphonic poem “My River runs to thee…” (2021) was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. This poetic work is a hommage to the American author Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) and based on her epinymous poem.

Ksenija Sidorova became a prize-winning undergraduate and postgraduate at the Royal Academy of Music studying under Owen Murray. Praised as “revelatory” (New York Times) with “breathtaking virtuosity” (The Observer), Ksenija Sidorova is the leading ambassador for the classical accordion. Both a unique and charismatic performer, Ksenija is passionate about showcasing the vast capabilities of her instrument. Her repertoire spans from Bach to Piazzolla, from Efrem Podgaits and Václav Trojan, to Erkki-Sven Tüür and George Bizet, as well as new accordion concertos composed especially for her, plus a multitude of chamber projects.

The Latvian National Symphony Orchestra is one of the cornerstones of Latvian national culture, its history spans almost a century. The LNSO is a six-time winner of the Latvian Grand Music Award. Since 2013, the music director of the LNSO is maestro Andris Poga, a conductor sought after by top orchestras from around the world. The orchestra’s most notable former music directors include Jānis Mediņš, Leonīds Vīgners, Edgars Tons, Vassily Sinaisky, Olari Elts, and Karel Mark Chichon.

Andris Poga is the Chief Conductor of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra since 2021/22 season. He was the Music Director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO) from 2013 till 2021 and will continue to collaborate with the LNSO as its Artistic Advisor. He is frequent guest conductor with the leading orchestras of Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Scandinavia. After the first successful collaborations he has been invited back to the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, DSO Berlin, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester Hamburg, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, SWR Symphony Stuttgart, WDR Sinfonieorchester, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo and many others. He has also conducted the Wiener Symphoniker, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orchestre National de France, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony.
