Muhai Tang, conductor

Muhai Tang (b. 1949) studied composition and conducting at the conservatory in his native city Shanghai and the Munich Musikhochschule. The invitation by Herbert von Karajan to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1983 marked a turning point in his career. He made his US début with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1988. and has since appeared with leading orchestras on both sides of the Atlantic. Muhai Tang still has close ties with his homeland, where he conducts regularly as well as in other Asian countries and Australia.

In 2006 he assumed the position of Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. He has an extraordinarily wide repertoire, ranging from Bach to composers of today.
Muhai Tang has previously held five positions as Principal Conductor, most recently as Chief Conductor of Finnish National Opera in Helsinki (2003-2006).
